FREMONT, CA:  Implementing the business information modeling (BIM) methodology requires the consideration of three key aspects: process,  technology, and people who bridge them together. The key points in each of these aspects are highlighted in the following paragraphs.

1. Technology

It’s essential to consider the hardware and software requirements while making a shift from CAD to BIM. The two popular modeling tools available in the market are Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD and Autodesk Revit.

Revit vs. ArchiCAD

The operating system is also considered along with the software. This is because Revit is only supported by Windows operating system while Windows, as well as MAC, supports ArchiCAD. Software version also requires attention as Revit does not support bidirectional compatibility. Modeling software consumes a significant amount of RAM.

2. Processes

Establishing the objectives is the key to apply BIM to projects and workflow. The implementation is achieved in multiple levels that require organization and patience, which should be done with the assistance of a professional or a BIM consultant.

Once the implementation goals are established, the impact on productivity is observed. This includes the time required for training and the learning curves of the software.

‘Learning Curve’ Optimization

One of the critical steps to optimize the learning curve is by implementing it into a beta project. The intention is to produce content and to detect the weak spots of the program before applying the BIM methodology to the rest of the projects. The beta project also provides a starting point for the creation of internal documentation of the modeling standards and requirements requires by the company.

These aspects will boost the process of BIM methodology integration and will also mitigate the overheads that come along.

3. People

Irrespective of whether Building Information Modelling is used by an individual or by an architectural firm, the implementation begins with understanding these technologies and their effect on the project development process. Further, it’s not required for all the team members to learn to the same degree or the same tools. Thus, it’s essential to consider the people and their profiles that will use the technology.
