The Centre for 5G Digital Building Technology is exploring how 5G can improve the way people design, deliver and manage Singapore’s built environment
FREMONT, CA: The Center for 5G Digital Building Technology is looking into how 5G would help people better design, deliver, and manage the urban environment in Singapore. The Department of the Built Environment at the National University of Singapore (NUS) has launched this research centre. The centre will advance 5G applications in the real world, such as digital twins, and teach a new generation of 5G professionals.
The potential of 5G to give minimal lag time while processing massive volumes of data allows for the deployment of digital twins in smart buildings. Previously, the limitations of 4G limited such technology. Security teams can use digital twins to remotely monitor the building for invaders. When an intruder is identified, robotic dogs can be dispatched to investigate further.

Experts believe that digital twins can help enhance building sanitation in the same way. Sensors will detect areas that need cleaning and will dispatch disinfection robots to the afflicted regions without the need for human participation. In addition, digital twins can help the construction sector by lowering costs and increasing safety on the job site.
A digital twin platform that remotely monitors the location and activity of multiple gadgets makes this possible. The platform aggregates data from physical sensors into a single central hub that humans may use to control and conduct specific operations.
In addition to assisting the facilities management business, the Centre functions as a training ground for students interested in learning about 5G and associated technology. Students and industry professionals, for example, will be able to use 5G-enabled technologies like virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. They can also try out other 5G-enabled digital building technologies, such as video walls and holographic displays. It provides a good learning environment for students by exposing them to real-world events and technologies, allowing us to better nurture them into leaders of the smarter built environment.

Furthermore, 5G allows all-in-one VR or mixed reality devices to be used without the need for a desktop. Previously, VR devices required a lot of data and had a short lag time, so they had to be used on a computer, which meant they had to be desktop-based. Industry professionals can obtain virtual training for risky tasks remotely using all-in-one VR devices, lowering expenses and enhancing safety. Workers in oil refineries, for example, maybe trained to respond to crises such as fires without jeopardizing their lives.
