Another case in point, to further substantiate UrbanTech’s prowess, is the replacement of Third Avenue Bridge over the Harlem River. Working with Kiska Construction and the renowned naval architect, Greg Nordholm, UrbanTech provided engineering services related to the blue-water tow from Alabama to New York. The main swing span of the bridge was erected offsite in Alabama, where it was loaded onto an oceangoing barge, utilizing self-propelled modular transporter (SPMT) units and was towed to New York City. Before transportation, UrbanTech analyzed the barge-bridge system under anticipated loads that the bridge may encounter during the voyage. According to the analysis, the sea fastening and bridge reinforcing system was designed for 21-feet sea state. During transportation, the barge was hit by a storm with 18-feet waves. However, the bridge did not register any noticeable stress change because of the innovative 3-point hydraulic suspension design. With UrbanTech’s valuable contribution, the bridge was not only delivered safely to New York City, but the overall project was also awarded as the “Best Bridge Project” of the year in 2005.
