HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. It encompasses all systems homeowners use to adjust the humidity and temperature within their homes. HVAC systems also employ filtration and mechanical ventilation to improve indoor air quality. Typical HVAC systems include furnaces, boilers, ductless mini-splits, and central air conditioning units. Large-scale refrigeration in commercial buildings also falls under the HVAC category.
How HVAC Systems Function
HVAC systems generally operate as forced-air systems, utilizing air circulation to provide heating and cooling. A central unit treats the air, which is then circulated through the building's ductwork into the living spaces by a blower. In ductless systems, air is exchanged directly with the living area without ductwork. As the air passes through the HVAC unit, it often goes through filters to remove dust, allergens, and other particles.
Key Components of HVAC Systems
Air Ducts
The ductwork in a building is a network of pipes running through the ceiling and walls, distributing warm or cold air from a central HVAC unit to different areas. Sealing and insulating ducts is crucial for maximum energy efficiency. Specialized ductwork components, called plenums, connect air ducts to air conditioners and heating units. Typically, there are two plenums: the return plenum, which manages air inflow, and the supply plenum, which controls air outflow.
Air Handlers
An air handler is the indoor component of a central heating or cooling system that distributes conditioned air throughout the building. It includes a fan and blower motor to circulate hot or cold air through the ductwork. The air handler also introduces air for treatment, where evaporator coils in an air conditioner cool the air as it passes through.
Condensers
The condenser is the outdoor unit of a central air conditioning system. It acts as a heat exchanger for the refrigerant, a substance used in air conditioners that vaporizes or expands to produce a cooling effect. The condenser contains the compressor, which prepares the refrigerant to return inside and cool more air, and condenser coils, which transfer heat from the refrigerant to the outside air.
Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers
Depending on the local environment, adjusting the humidity and moisture levels in the air is necessary to keep a home comfortable and free of mold and mildew. Dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air, while humidifiers add it. Although air conditioning systems naturally dehumidify the air, a separate humidifier may be required in dry conditions.
