Installing the right air handling unit ensures longer-lasting installations, savings, and good air quality.
FREMONT, CA: Demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) systems are effective in spaces with many occupants, such as gyms, auditoriums, and multipurpose rooms, to adjust the supply of outside air ventilation accordingly. Carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors can be used in this approach to measure concentrations and adjust outside air volume accordingly.
A system that reduces the quantity of humid outside air when it is not necessary for ventilation can save energy and assist in controlling moisture (and mold) in spaces served by air handlers. It is important to calibrate and maintain CO2 and other sensors regularly.

There are several advantages to central air handling units compared to individual unit ventilators and heat pumps:
Air filtration: Pollen, mold spores, animal dander, insect proteins, pesticides, lead, and infectious bacteria and viruses are among the airborne particulates in addition to atmospheric dust. Ventilation systems can include features that benefit school occupants and make air handling unit systems more efficient and longer lasting. The air handling units and ductwork may also require less frequent cleaning owing to these features.
Filter efficiency: Equipment and occupants are better protected with a higher rating. According to estimates, an increase of 30 percent in static pressure across a coil costs $200 per 10,000 cubic feet per minute (at 7 cents per KWH). Added costs such as cleaning dirty heating and cooling oils, drain pans, and air ducts are not included. Pre-filters upstream of main filters should have a low efficiency of up to 10 percent. Changing pre-filters is usually easy and inexpensive, which will capture a significant amount of the particulate mass in the air and extend the life of the main filters.
Pressure drop: Ventilation systems should have more filter surface area. Reducing the number of filter changes each year reduces the labor cost needed to maintain filters properly, and a reduction in static pressure loss reduces the power needed to run fans and blowers, saving money. As the efficiency and pressure drop ratio of different filter media is approximately proportional, more filter surface area is the most effective method for reducing pressure drop. Filters with a large surface area, such as pleated or bag filters, can accomplish this.
Monitoring pressure: Ensure that all filter banks bear simple differential pressure gauges. It will save school facilities personnel the time and trouble guessing when a filter needs replacing. A gauge that measures from zero to one inch can save money and the environment by preventing premature disposal of filters that still have useful lives and can prevent health and maintenance problems caused by overloaded filters. The gauge should be easily visible from a standing position in an easily-accessible location near the air handling unit.
