Europe had its first 3D-printed building of 3 floors made in Germany by PERI in 2021 and now Asia also has one.
FREMONT, CA: Using a 3D construction printer from industry leader COBOD International, Dar Al Arkan, a real estate development business based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, unveiled its first project: a three-story 3D printed villa. The project is located in Shams Al Riyadh, a new development project with 12 million m2 of land just northwest of Riyadh, the Saudi capital. It is a part of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
Their efforts are concentrated on growing the real estate market in the kingdom by using the newest trends and technology derived from international best practices to advance their sector locally and achieve the goals of vision 2030. According to Dar Al Arkan's project manager for the technology, Wael Al Hagen, businesses can now concentrate on increasing design flexibility and productivity and achieving higher cost efficiency with the introduction of 3D construction printing.

The first Dar Al Arkan project is a three-story, 330 m2 house with a total height of 9.9 metres. The first floor is 130 m2, and it comprises a large hall with multiple living spaces, a kitchen, and two restrooms. The second level is 140 m2, and it comprises a living area, a balcony, and three bedrooms, one of which is a master bedroom, two baths, and a bathroom. The maid's room with a bathroom, a multipurpose hall, and a laundry room are located on the third floor of the roof annexe. Due to the third floor's relative diminution compared to the first two floors, this type of building is referred to in Saudi Arabia as a two-storey + annexe even though it has three stories.
Dar Al Arkan relocated the printer to create a second residence after printing the first one. The second home, which will ordinarily take a month to complete, is currently being built, but Wael Al Hagen continued they've already finished the first floor of 130 m2 in just eight days. With additional insulation layers and energy-saving measures, this 3D-printed villa can reduce energy use by up to 30 per cent. Companies invite all industry professionals to see the first villa that has been finished and the second that is still being built for themselves.
The mansion was constructed in August and September in a desert region without a tent when Saudi Arabian temperatures can reach more than 40 degrees. The printing of the villa demonstrates the capacity of the Dar Al Arkan team to handle top-notch technology without the use of a tent. They are pushing the envelope for how construction will be done in the future. Dar Al Arkan's use of a COBOD 3D construction printer as a printing tool demonstrates how 3D printing buildings can save time and money.
