A study, surrounding the utilisation of BIM, has been actively spearheaded by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST). This places the institute as a significant contributor in pushing forward BIM applications in harmony with the significant shifts and digitalization occurring across the life cycles of constructed assets.

Through research and innovation initiatives, the study is actively addressing climate change challenges and promoting environmental sustainability in the built environment. It highlights the critical role digital models and BIM play in promoting innovations.
BIM is a data source for addressing more general issues like decarbonisation, life cycle assessment, environmental reporting, and circularity, in addition to being a tool for design, construction, and operation. At the BIMLUX 2023 event, the institute's creative contributions were highlighted, focusing on life cycle assessment and digital deconstruction.
Digital Deconstruction
The Digital DeConstruction project presents a novel digital workflow promoting circular practices in the construction industry. The platform streamlines the processes of inventory management, inspection, and decision-making to improve the reuse of building materials. Just 3 per cent of construction waste is currently reused, underscoring the enormous potential for a circular approach. The platform increases efficiency by using 3D scanning to expedite and streamline material inventory. The utilisation of this methodology during the deconstruction of a station resulted in a 17 per cent material reuse rate, signifying a noteworthy advancement in the field of circular construction practices.
Using LCA for a Building with BIM
Life cycle assessment, or LCA, is becoming increasingly important for property development as the European Union places more emphasis on reducing carbon footprints in future policies. BIM and (LCA integration has the potential to completely transform the process by reducing costs and time while resolving issues with data quality. Setting carbon-related targets requires precise quantity estimates from project inception.
