The building sector is facing challenges such as increased expenses for building materials and a shortage of workers. GlobalData analysts predict construction output will grow modestly by 1.8 per cent globally in 2023, up from 1.7 per cent in 2022.
With an expected 3 per cent increase in output, the industry expects a possible recovery in 2024. From 2025 to 2027, output is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.2 per cent. Investments in the energy and infrastructure sectors are crucial to the growth of the construction industry as a whole. According to McKinsey, significant spending on energy transition is expected to reach $275 trillion between 2021 and 2050.
Technological Advancements
An interesting mental shift is occurring in the construction industry, which has historically been hesitant to adopt new technologies, according to a GlobalData technology survey. Increasing competitiveness, cutting costs (both 37 per cent), and increasing productivity (61 per cent) are the main forces behind this shift. Two other important motivators were securing contracts (26 per cent) and expediting construction times (35 per cent). Notably, compliance with building information modelling (BIM) standards is becoming increasingly important, particularly when getting contracts for public projects in different nations. One example is the UK, which has required BIM Level 2 compliance for centrally procured construction projects since 2016.
Modern Methods of Construction
Prefabrication and modular construction techniques are becoming more and more popular. Grand View Research projects that the global prefabricated construction market will grow at a rate of 7.5 per cent annually to reach $162.4 billion by 2030. Prefabrication is becoming increasingly popular in the construction industry due to its advantages, which include shorter construction times, better quality control, and increased cost-effectiveness. Although these approaches might encounter difficulties with standardisation and logistical difficulties in transportation, they provide practical answers to city space issues and enhance worker safety
Sustainable Construction
Sustainability has a significant role in the construction industry's future; by 2028, the green building market is expected to grow to $394.4 billion. Adopting sustainable practices, such as using renewable energy sources and energy-efficient materials, helps achieve environmental goals and saves money. Despite the advantages, there are still difficulties in shifting to sustainability; 47 per cent of respondents cite increased process complexity. Construction companies are improving data monitoring to help them navigate this by giving them visibility into supply chains and processes, which allows them to make well-informed decisions about cutting costs and emissions.

The market for smart buildings is expected to grow at an annual growth rate of 22.2 per cent to reach $328.62 billion by 2029, driven by the emergence of smart cities. Intelligent infrastructure, which uses data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), promises improved occupant experiences, predictive maintenance, and effective resource management.
