Sustainable materials are more cost-effective to build with, in construction than traditional materials.
FREMONT, CA: The production and transportation of materials used in the construction of offices, homes, hospitals, shopping centres and other forms of buildings all involve carbon emissions. The dispositions and demolitions of those construction materials will also generate carbon emissions. There are also emissions of operational carbons, which are regarding the lighting, cooling, heating, and powering of buildings throughout the lifespan of the buildings.
As a matter of fact, according to the United Nations Environment Program, the construction industry is responsible for around 37 per cent of global energy and process-related carbon dioxide emissions, which also include energy-related emissions, which amount to a whopping 10 gigatons of carbon dioxide. As a highly carbon-intensive industry, the construction sector will necessitate decarbonising and will require the combined ingenuity and efforts of designers, architects, builders, suppliers, subcontractors, and other parties involved in the industry. Improving sustainability can be performed in three parts by focusing on methods, models, and materials.
In the past, the construction of a sustainable building was perceived as a financially-heavy undertaking, but with the evolution of the supply chain and the continual updates from the technology division, the industry has redefined its ability to implement sustainable projects. Numerous materials that are used in the construction of sustainable buildings are low-cost materials that are generated from recycled or byproduct sources, along with reduced ingredient costs. As a result, sustainable materials are becoming more cost-effective than their alternatives.
Moreover, other sustainable construction methods include modular construction, prefabrication, and 3D printing, which include reduced labour costs, less waste, improved quality control, and project schedules that take shorter periods. This enables construction companies to create and execute projects within budget.
Customers Prefer Decarbonisation
While many organisations are focused on long-term goals, they are also experiencing pressure from their customers to decarbonise, as most customers are now prioritising sustainability and want their developers to reduce carbon footprints for new construction projects.
Presently, construction companies are taking multiple steps in the direction of implementing efficient construction processes and the integration of renewable energies into brand-new buildings. However, buildings that are already established continue to emit large amounts of carbon dioxide. The construction industry can accomplish net zero by 2050 by retrofitting existing buildings to decarbonise their operations. Although the initial idea of retrofitting may seem expensive, building owners can recover those costs by using new technologies such as energy management systems.
