Green buildings make the most of this by including solar panels and renewable energy whenever practical.
Without the use of any other equipment, passive solar relies on the sun and the building’s position to supply heat and light. It covers everything from window arrangement to skylights and more. Correctly positioned windows to allow sunshine to enter, and a thermal mass, such as brick, concrete, adobe, or water, absorbs the heat and slowly releases it at night. A new home, even a green one, consumes energy and materials, whereas an existing home has already consumed that energy; therefore, adding solar to an existing home has a lower ‘energy cost.’
