Geotechnical engineering is a civil engineering department; however, it involves using scientific methods and principles to collect and interpret the physical properties of the ground. Geotechnical engineers are involved in all phases of the design of structures, from concept to construction.
Their work is important in the design and planning process as they assess the integrity of soil, clay, silt, sand, and rock before construction commences. They start by undertaking a desk study, assessing maps, and contacting local authorities. This is followed by a ground investigation based on the findings of the desk study and involves trial pitting and sampling to uncover potential issues.
Geotechnical engineers work within multidisciplinary teams, supported by intermediate and junior engineers and CAD technicians. As a senior geotechnical engineer on a hydro plant project, tasks may include participating in technical reviews (e.g., peer reviews), tailings dam inspections, dam safety reviews, and other studies related to the design and construction of mine waste facilities.

Roles of a geotechnical engineer:
Investigation
A geotechnical engineer's role is to investigate the area's subsurface intended for the project. The engineer will be responsible for several tasks, the first of which is collecting soil samples and determining the stress-bearing capacity of the ground of the proposed site.
Safety tests
The geotechnical engineer is also accountable for conducting tests relating to the location's safety. They will have to look at possible issues like erosion, slope, settlement, and other factors that could endanger the stability of the structure once it is in place.
Analysis
The results of the investigation and tests are examined with the relevant software. Once the analysis has been performed, the geotechnical engineer may be required to assist with the project by developing suitable foundations and earthworks for the site. They should have a decent knowledge of the data and be capable of modeling future conditions.
Progress meetings
The role of the geotechnical engineer expands beyond the construction site. They are accountable for keeping the clients informed and should know their needs. The geotechnical engineer should often meet with clients to explain the ongoing construction and if they are on track with the work according to time constraints and the budget.
