Seismic simulation platforms can identify weak points in building and bridge constructions that need to be addressed, and alert users in real-time.

FREMONT, CA: National Institute of Applied Research's Research Center says a smart city platform called SmartES can scan for weak structures and simulate damages after an earthquake.Satellite photos, models created by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and LiDAR point clouds are all part of the GIS-based platform. It can be utilized for pre-earthquake mitigation and post-earthquake emergency response. Seismic simulation platforms can identify weak points in building and bridge constructions that need to be addressed. The platform can also identify earthquake occurrences and alert users in real-time.

After an earthquake, the platform facilitates the collection of data from the Central Weather Bureau, such as seismic waves, and information on nearby fire departments and hospitals for post-disaster support. The portal will also notify of post-earthquake UAV patrols, instant photographs of damaged structures, information on rescue preparations, and unsafe buildings that require quick repair to avert possible fatalities. After the quake, a report will be generated in 10 minutes

To make the platform more comprehensive, smartES has been connected to the government's mapping database and Formosat-5 image database. The platform will incorporate IoT data, monitoring data, and surveillance photographs from different sections of Taiwan's cities and counties to help with typhoons, floods, and mudslides.

Over the last several years, the worldwide trend of earthquake resistance and catastrophe reduction techniques for earthquake engineering has shifted from fundamental requirements to functioning after earthquakes. The initiatives also concentrate on rebuilding the nation following the catastrophe.

To assist and integrate domestic industry, government, and academia, the National Earthquake Center will concentrate on three primary research and development areas: seismic design, evaluation, and reinforcement; scenario simulation and risk assessment; and safety monitoring and early warning.

According to OpenGov Asia, the Taiwanese government has encouraged the creation of smart services to solve local challenges, such as smart fire management and disaster mitigation. Firefighters have many psychological and training skills, such as stress tolerance and equipment mastery.

A Taiwanese business created the “Smart 3D Realty Fire Control System” using 3D-BIM, 3D mapping, and LiDAR. Commanders can also deploy in advance via the system on the approach to the fire site and fine-tune the deployment as required after arriving at the scene based on the filmed internal/external surroundings and points of interest tagging.
