FREMONT, CA: After several turbulent years characterized by an economic slowdown, labor shortages, and supply chain disruptions, the construction industry is improving. This is good news for all Americans, as the sector plays a significant role in the nation's economic plan, which is in part encouraged by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The Act, signed into law in November 2021, allots $110 billion for the renovation of roads, bridges, and other infrastructure, and it could generate around 461,000 construction jobs.

In the spring and summer of 2022, the IIJA increased the number of construction projects by making federal cash available to rehabilitate bridges and highways, restore rivers, and other upgrades. While this increased activity boosts economic recovery and improves the quality of the nation's transportation system, the heavy construction equipment required to make these improvements heavily relies on fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel, which emit harmful air pollutants such as carbon dioxide, methane, and black carbon. These toxic gases increase climate change and negatively influence wildlife habitats by contaminating water and air, causing hydrological disturbances such as flooding and droughts and resulting in the isolation and fragmentation of wildlife populations.
Construction zones are notorious for causing massive traffic jams, which in turn increases emissions from both the construction trucks and the idling vehicles. A vehicle that idles for longer than 10 seconds consumes more fuel and creates more pollutants than one that is stopped and restarted.
The good news is that technologies can now mitigate the adverse environmental effects of construction projects without limiting economic development. These strategies and technology can reduce emissions, decrease animal impacts, and enhance project planning.
METHODS AND TECHNOLOGIES THAT REDUCE EMISSIONS
The global construction industry is responsible for 38 percent of the world's carbon emissions due to its reliance on diesel engines. Both construction operations and the transportation of supplies to construction sites create emissions.
Construction firms can make the following adjustments to their practices to reduce emissions:
Minimize transport distances: Securing a location close to the construction site for storing necessary equipment and materials lowers the time and distance required to transfer supplies; choose vehicles of a suitable size. By selecting the appropriate size and kind of equipment for the task, project managers limit the number of trips from the job site to storage, decrease the time construction trucks idle, and prevent unnecessary emissions.
Try alternative fuels: Globally, businesses have begun substituting diesel with alternative fuels such as hydrotreated vegetable oil, biodiesel, and blended fuel products, which emit fewer pollutants without compromising performance.
Burn fuel better: The combustion engines of construction vehicles can be upgraded with dual-fuel applications that replace 50 percent of diesel fuel with hydrogen, lowering fuel costs and greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing air quality, and frequently prolonging engine life.
