Please introduce yourself and tell us about your journey to become the Senior Director of the Central Southern Illinois Area Chamber of Commerce.

With nearly three decades in the construction industry, I’ve navigated various roles in management, execution, estimation, and marketing. Over the past five years, I’ve transitioned from a primarily managementoriented role to one focused on engineering as the Senior Director Major Projects of CIMA+. This shift stemmed from collaborative projects where I worked closely with project owners, emphasizing a design-build approach. My commitment to excellence has propelled me to contribute to CIMA+’s growth in the engineering sector, fostering a reputation as a trusted leader

What are your recent initiatives that are being carried out to help clients in terms of cost reduction and challenges impacting the industry lately?

Recent initiatives in the construction industry involve leveraging AI-powered tools and robotics to enhance productivity and jobsite safety. Additionally, collaborative project delivery methods like integrated project delivery (IPD) and alliancing are gaining traction, mitigating risks and optimizing outcomes. However, challenges persist, including labor shortages driving up costs and delaying projects, alongside rising expenses due to regulations, environmental concerns, and complex contracts. Managing these challenges while embracing technological advancements and innovative project delivery approaches remains paramount.

What are the factors that have caused the increase in construction costs in the recent past, and how do you envision the future of the industry?

The surge in construction costs is attributed to various factors, including labor shortages stemming from an aging workforce and inadequate vocational training, leading to increased wages and project delays. Complex operations, stringent regulations, and supply chain disruptions further contribute to rising expenses. Looking ahead, the industry will prioritize sustainability, cutting-edge technology, off-site construction, and collaborative project delivery. Embracing AI-powered tools and robotics can enhance productivity and address labor shortages. As AI evolves, future applications may revolutionize the industry, including AI-driven robots performing construction tasks and automating quality control in document management.
