How Elevators and Escalators Have Evolved with AI and IoT

Michael Rosario, Construction Tech Review | Tuesday, December 01, 2020

Technology has completely transformed the way elevators and escalators function today.

Fremont, CA: From the time they were introduced in the late 1800s, elevators and escalators have been the main enabler in the vertical growth central to the urbanization of the world's cities. The construction of elevators and escalators has evolved over the years. Instead of traditional steel ropes, which are more eco-friendly and robust than their predecessors, elevators can now be hoisted with carbon fiber ropes and can now fly at high speeds while using up to 90 percent less energy than those generated nearly 30 years ago. Escalatorsoffer more design choices with the advent of arched- and spiral-shaped varieties.

Over the last decade, advances in AI and IoT have changed elevators and escalators with regard to speed and comfort, which is beyond their mechanical function of getting individuals to travel high-rise. They have become more intelligent, connecting to the cloud where they analyze and store the data they collect.

In the age of smart buildings, having outstanding elevators, escalators and their associated solutions is no longer enough. The right technologies must be put in place that enable smooth, safe and efficient people flow. Smart elevators and escalators are smart machines that can generate data, identify issues, and make real-time decisions based on IoT and artificial intelligence on maintenance problems and operational patterns.Application Programming Interfaces (API) can be created to build solutions within an interconnected environment.

One of the primary applications of IoT in the elevator and escalator industry is predictive maintenance. Maintenance, particularly at times of unexpected breakdowns, may interrupt the movement of people inside buildings. Without the need for a human technician to visit the site itself, IoT allows elevators and escalators to exchange their output data and easily foresee maintenance problems.
