Green Construction for Sustainable Housing

Construction Tech Review | Wednesday, May 01, 2019

The exacerbating concerns about climate change have transformed sustainability from just a trend into an environmental necessity. The continually changing weather conditions across the world are causing a rise in global temperature. The fluctuations in the ecology are giving rise to droughts and floods, making sustainability unavoidable.

The most significant factor responsible for global warming is the accumulation of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the earth's atmosphere, which is driving up the global temperature by trapping the sun’s heat. Industries and vehicles are the main contributors to the accretion of the harmful gas, which recently reached a record concentration of 440ppm.

Many sectors have answered the call for sustainability to counter global warming, and the construction industry is one of them. Some organizations are taking steps toward green construction to aid in alleviating the effects of greenhouse emissions, making use of construction management software and request for information (RFI) tools to help in the sustainability initiative. Green constructions will ensure the utilization of eco-friendly materials and processes, starting from planning and construction to renovation and demolition.

In accordance with the drive toward sustainability, the insulation technique has been developed for the efficient control of temperature within the houses, aimed to limit the use of air-conditioners and heaters. The insulation provided in the walls prevents the exchange of heat with external surroundings. Natural insulation materials like sheep's wool, flax, hemp, and wood fiber are used. In addition to their non-toxicity, their absorbent properties allow them to regulate the humidity inside the houses.

Another important feature of green construction is the utilization of renewable power sources. Integrating sustainable energy into the house power source will not only help in cutting back on electric bills, but will also help in limiting the use of electricity from power plants which contribute to global warming with their carbon emissions.

Making use of energy efficient appliances in house can also take sustainability a long way since they are built to consume the bare minimum amount of energy. Most house appliances have marking from letter A to D that convey the energy efficiency of the machine, with A being the most efficient. Replacing concrete with alternative building materials will also help in allaying the effects of greenhouse gases, since cement is one of the major contributors of CO2. It should be remembered that sustainability is not a passing trend, but the moral responsibility of every human.
